What Parents and Guardians Expect from You

Education is a complex undertaking. It differs from many professions in the multitude and variety of daily tasks that teachers must accomplish. As a teacher, you not only have to master the art of interacting successfully with others at all times, but you also face a wide range of other responsibilities.

When you are a novice teacher who is just beginning to work with the families of your students, you may find it hard to decipher what they expect from their child's teacher. Some may want you to be a tough disciplinarian, while others expect you to take an "anything goes" attitude. As confusing as these extremes can be, however, most parents and guardians are reasonable in their expectations. Here's what parents and guardians expect you to do:
  • Treat their child fairly
  • Teach the material their child needs to succeed
  • Work with them for the good of their child
  • Communicate with them early about problems
  • Show that you value their child
  • Keep their child safe from harm
  • Act in a professional manner at all times
  • Respect their rights and efforts as parents
  • Agree to reasonable requests that benefit their child
  • Make school a pleasant experience
