Judging Students for the Content of Their Character
In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I
Have A Dream" speech he said,
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
I recently saw a group of students dancing in wheelchairs and realized that there aren't any handicapped students.
Only handicapping conditions which in most cases, can be overcome.
By imposing our labels on children we frequently "see" these conditions before we see the students and start presuming what they can and cannot achieve.
Each student is a cornucopia of various physical and behavioral traits.
No single trait remotely defines any of us.
This prejudice, or prejudgment, clouds the achievement possibilities we expect from special education, minority, and poor students.
We need to suspend judgment until we "see" what the individuals can achieve.
