English Language Learners (ELL)
Educators are dealing with an increasing number of
English language learners.
The U.S. Department of Education estimates that the number of ELL students has doubled from 2.2 million to 4.4 million during the 1990s.
Several practical pieces of advice: First, do not lose your patience in dealing with these children.
Remember that they are going through two learning processes at the same time.
First they are learning the language and then they are learning the subject you are teaching.
It will take some of them longer to learn than others.
Some of these children are also learning the Western or English alphabet.
Some Chinese, Arab, Russian, or Turkish students use a different alphabet than we do.
Avoid overly correcting their spoken grammar.
See if you can find another student who can serve as a mentor to help them.
Use simple sentences and language in dealing with them.
Compliment them when they succeed but compliment them even more when they try.
Imagine if the situation was reversed and you were in thieir country trying to learn their language and subjects.
