Avoid Pitfalls That Plague Too Many Teachers
Many factors can interfere with a teacher's delivery of instruction. Teachers who are stressed, too tired to plan appealing lessons, or not quite in tune with the needs and interests of their students are likely to lack a smooth flow of instruction. Happily, you can avoid most of these pitfalls with just a bit of awareness, common sense, and planning. Here is a list of considerations that will help you avoid mistakes when you deliver instruction:
Whose voice is heard?
Don't talk more than your students do.
Do design activities that encourage your students to speak to each other and to you.
Who does the work?
Don't create lessons that allow your students to be passive.
Do skip the worksheets that require only recollection by rote, and ask students to solve
puzzles, highlight notes, debate points, or engage in other open-ended thinking activities.
Are you letting teaching opportunities go by?
Don't let the national push for accountability intimidate you into neglecting to use those serendipitous moments that sometimes arise in every
classroom.
Do turn any occasion into a learning event in your classroom. Seize every
opportunity, and capitalize on current events and student interests
whenever you can.
